Work-in-progress breeding group of small, delicious pickling cucumbers. This is a selection from our Apple Snack population, from maternal lines with Dragon's Egg parentage. Originally I thought I'd just be weeding all the pickles out of the Apple Snack group, but I've developed a soft spot for them and decided to let them do their own thing.

These are relatively small cucumbers, perfect for maximizing space in a pickle jar. The biggest fruits do not exceed 4" in length, and are fairly slow to plump up which makes for a good harvest window. They have all the nice flavour attributes of their apple cuke pedigree, with no bitterness. They're perfect for baby dills but still have a good texture at full maturity without being too seedy.Colour-wise I'm seeing two main categories: variations of dark green on lighter coloured stripes with black spines, and solid coloured fruits of creamy ivory or a soft yellow-green with white spines.

There are still a few plants that produce round fruits. So far I've been keeping them in the population without saving seeds from them, but am going to start removing them in the upcoming generation. Point being - expect a few apple cukes with your pickles! At least for now...
