A free-wheeling three-way grex comprised of the varieties Blacktail Mountain, Early Moonbeam, and Sugar Baby. Early and cool weather tolerant like its parents, this breeders mix produces round fruits in a variety of sizes, averaging about 8 lbs with a pretty wide spread of about 5-17lbs. Flesh colours are a mix of red, yellow and orange. 

Matures a little later than Blacktail Mountain, but not by much, so those of us who are short on frost-free days can still expect good results. The seed I offer here is the F6 generation, and my first selection of this population. It wasn’t very rigorous, I just eliminated a few plants that had disease issues and chose fruits that had a good sweetness with a nice crisp texture. Next time I grow these I’m going to do plant-specific selections, but still want keep things really diverse to see if any notable plants pop up over time.  

This population was created around 2014 when the folks at Glorious Organics decided to grow the three parents together. They let the plants freely cross-pollinate, selecting the earliest, tastiest fruits to collect seeds from for replanting. For a few years the fruits went out to their CSA members, who then sent back seeds from their favourite melons. They were also served at a huge fundraiser dinner, where folks spat the seeds of their favourite melons into a collection jar. Sounds like a pretty fun way to do selection work, and puts a new spin on collaborative breeding :)

Our original stockseed was shared with me by David Catzel at the 2023 BC Seed Gathering in Richmond, BC. The population was created by David at Glorious Organics c. 2014, and selected over the years by the GO team, their CSA members, and other friends of the farm.
