NEW for 2024!
Short-vined plants with huge yields of small earth-toned dry beans. Despite the runners, these plants hold their pods off the ground reasonably well so you can treat them as a bush bean. Give them a little extra room to spread out if you have it, but if you need to stay within the confines of a smaller bed you can just flop stray vines on top of the other foliage and they will be quite content. Or, put up a short trellis and let 'em climb. Unlike their tepary brethren which can be a little difficult to process, these beans are quite easy to shell or thresh. The flavour is fantastic, this is one of the tastiest dry beans available today!
The original variety description mentions a seed colour breakdown of about 3/4 black with the remaining 25% being tan, brown, gold or speckled. My population is a little different - I haven't noticed any speckled seeds, but there are pink, olive green, and white seeds in addition to the other colours, and the distribution is closer to 50% black and 50% other. Beefy Resilient was first released as a segregating F4 population around 2012, so this new seed colour distribution illustrates one way a diverse gene pool can evolve over time.
These beans were bred by Carol Deppe, and arose from a chance cross of Gaucho (common bean - Phaseolus vulgaris) and Black Mitla (tepary bean - Phaseolus acutifolius). This kind of cross between species "shouldn't" happen, so it just goes to show that there are always exceptions to the rule in gardening.
Our original stockseed came from Bright Farm via the BC Eco Seed Coop.
